Abstract

Background:Histamineisanubiquitousinflammatorymediatorofnumerousphysiologicalprocesses.Histamineanditsreceptorshavebeenimplicatedinmultiplesclerosis(MS)diseasepathogenesis.Weprospectivelyenrolled36MSpatientsand19ageandgender-matchedhealthyvolunteersforcerebrospinalfluid(CSF)histamineanalysis.

Findings:CSFHISTAMINELEVELSINMSPATIENTSAMPLESWERESIGNIFICANTLYHIGHER(MEDIAN:35.6pg/ml)thanincontrols(median:5.5pg/ml;Beta=0.525,p<0.001).Inaddition,histamineincreasedwithage(Pearson'scorrelation,p<0.003).

Conclusions:Histaminemaybeanimportantfactorforboththeinitiationandmaintenanceofchronicinflammatorydiseasesofthecentralnervoussystem.OurobservationencouragesadeeperinvestigationoftheroleofhistamineinMS.
