Morphofunctional analysis of Late Paleozoic conodont elements and apparatuses

Author(s): Zhuravlev AV

Abstract

Five functional types are recognized among Late Paleozoic conodont elements; they are distinguished by morphological and histological characteristics: grasping-holding, filtering, cutting, crushing, and grinding. Combinations of functional types of elements form functional types of conodont apparatuses, the main of which are filtering, grasping-cutting, grasping-pressing, grasping-cutting-grinding, and grasping-cutting-crushing apparatuses.
