Abstract

"When you explain cardiac catheterization to the child, tailor your explanation to his age, development level, past experience, and understanding of the situation. Emphasize what he'll see, feel, and hear during the procedure, and try to relate these sen sations to those he's already experienced.
"To explain the basic principles of the test, you'll need to know the child's concept of the heart. Ask him to draw a picture of a heart and use it to assess his level of understanding. (This is especially important if cardiac surgery is anticipated.) Then explain where the 'tube' will go and what the doctor will see.
