Blood coagulation activities of leaf extracts of Ocimum gratissimum plant in man

Author(s): Edemeka DBU, Ogwu AS

Abstract

The effects of aqueous and methanol extracts of Ocimum gratissimum on the prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) of normal plasma and Factor VIII-deficient plasma were studied. A test mixture with methanol extract significantly shortened the APTT of normal and Factor VIII-deficient plasma samples. The biological activity suggests the extract contains unidentified constituents that promote blood coagulation.
