Abstract

Herbal medicine is the oldest form of medicine known to mankind. It was the mainstay of many early civilization and still the most widely practiced form of medicine in the world today (Srivastava et al., 1996). Traditional medicine which is widespread throughout the world has been recognized by World Health Organization (WHO) as an essential building block of primary health care. World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that approximately 80% of the developing world population meets their primary health care needs through traditional medicine (Bannerman, 1982).
