Strobilurins in management of sheath blight disease of rice: A review

Abstract

To review the extensive studies on the biofungicidal activity of the strobilurins in India and abroad against the existing recommendation of carbendazim, validamycin, and several other triazole fungicides for sheath blight management, it was found that application of strobilurins gave effective control of sheath blight disease of rice and improved grain yield. Strobilurins, derived from natural products (Strobilurus tenacellus) are eco-friendly and safe to use in plant disease management. Four strobilurin fungicides, viz., azoxystrobin, kresoxim-methyl, trifloxystrobin, metominostrobin etc. have so far been identified. These compounds have broad-spectrum activity against major ascomycete, basidiomycete, deuteromycete and oomycete plant pathogens on various crops at low application rates. Apart from rice diseases like blast, sheath blight, sheath rot, brown spot, leaf scald and stem rot, these compounds appeared to possess good efficacy against late blight of potato and tomato, collar rot of groundnut, powdery mildews of cucurbits, cereals and grapevine.
